Tunnel Beach – the hidden gem

Over the weekend I took a drive to Tunnel Beach. It had been a few years since I visited this local icon, and wondered why I had taken so long. Really its not too far out of Dunedin (actually its IN Dunedin) – just a few kilometres from the city centre, and the views and private beach is just magical.
The landowner of the time (Cargill) made a tunnel complete with steps down to a private beach for his daughter to use.
Because it is advertised in the “Lonely Planet” and other tourism websites, tourists come to visit it, but the locals seem almost oblivious that it exists.

The Dunedin beaches are pristine on a beautiful day …

The cliffs tower over the beach – keeping watch. It made me realise just how ‘small’ and insignificant we are.

Due to the wet and slippery paths going down through the farmland, I only managed one photo of the entrance and area.
